“Eternal Sunshine: Act 1 (The Pledge)”- Learn to Love It.

November 8, 2011

Jay Electronica has kept bloggers, hip-hop heads, artists and fans alike, longing for music over the last 4 years since the release of “Eternal Sunshine: Act 1 (The Pledge)”. The man who is so good at rapping, but seems to be interested in everything but that very activity has become a living legend. Who even knew where Tepotzland was, before listening to him preach over movie scores? There is something eerily yet inspiring about his almost supernatural nature. The broadness of his knowledge, spanning from religion, to the secret behind our existence, to love, to rap, all add to the image of the man that it is so hard to find an image of. By the way, he covers all of these issues in a 15-minute album, counting the 6 minute intro in which he does not speak.

The mother of his kids, Erykah Badu, on the introduction to the album describes Jay:

“I wouldn’t even call him a person. He’s a weird looking cat. Ears are kinda pointy. He has a square head. He looks kinda like he’s an alien from somewhere. Really. But in a beautiful way. [Pause] Like some kind of mythical creature, who would have a bow and arrow on his back.”

While I am not claiming that Jay Electronica is certainly a person with supernatural abilities, there should be no doubt that he is certainly peculiar and special. He has a positive message, believes/advocates for the betterment of mankind, dispels negativity, and rhymes poetically and beautifully. I have never before listened to an album, let alone a hip-hop album, LET ALONE one that contains 9 minutes of music and felt so intrigued and enchanted. His point of views seem so unique that it almost makes one want to know every facet of belief within the Electronica mind state.

Listening to the album simultaneously can fill one’s fix for Jay Electronica, but moreso, inclines one to find out everything they can about the man. “Eternal Sunshine: Act 1 (The Pledge)” was recorded on “Garageband” by Electronica on his own, and although since then has released a couple songs here and there, there has been no albums and rarely any pieces of information or interviews released. With his signing to Roc Nation in 2010, and therefore linking up with debatably the greatest rapper ever, Jay-Z, and promising up-and-comer, J. Cole, the whole world should be waiting on a release from the man, and awaiting another piece to the puzzle of “Who is Jay Electronica?”
